Most of us know to wear green on St. Patrick’s day, March 17, in order to avoid getting pinched, but do you know why? History and urban legend cite a few different reasons that green has become the traditional color of this holiday.
Historically, Ireland was known as the “Emerald Isle” so naturally wearing green emerged as a festive way to celebrate and honor St. Patrick.
Urban legend says that wearing green makes you invisible to leprechauns, who are likely to sneak up and pinch anyone in sight. Thus, it became tradition to pinch those not wearing green on this holiday, as a reminder to avoid the leprechauns.
